What professional in your discipline do you admire? There are so many BIG names in wedding events; Jo Gartin, David Tutera, Colin Cowie...

I knew Gretchen of Altared Events was my next interview when she said “Remember that the wedding is one day…Kiss, hug often and always put an effort into your relationship as a couple and as friends”; that’s what works in my marriage and I hope the same for you!

Gretchen, who is Altared Events? Altared Events is my wedding consultation and design company created out of my desire to have a career I loved and that is a professional wedding consultant. For the last ten years I have educated myself, researched wedding traditions, customs and trends and gained all the experience I could in an effort to be the best wedding consultant I can and make my dreams and the dreams of my couples come true.

Where did the name come from? The name popped into my head when I was working as a communications specialist in 2003. I wasn’t trying to come up with anything clever or unique and yet I did. The name means so much to me, not only because of the wedding altar reference but because I aim for each wedding to be above and beyond what the couple wanted or expected. I do personal and meaningful weddings for wonderful and unique people and my company name reflects that.

When did you know you wanted to be a wedding consultant? I should have known at the age of six when I planned Barbie weddings that included borrowing my Mom’s camera for photos. Instead it took a Plan Your Wedding Project in my junior year Sociology class and my teacher giving me the highest grade and recommending it be my profession. It still took five years before I really believed I could make a living doing what I love, thankfully it finally set in!

Where did you train for this discipline? After years of planning weddings for friends and family I knew this was my calling. I wanted to set myself apart professionally so I researched the best certification programs for wedding consultation. I decided on the Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants because of their national reputation, California location, and dedication to member support and continued education.

Do you have a team and if so tell me about them? My regular Altared Events team is my family, really they are! In order to keep my services affordably priced, I work from my home office and have staff willing to work for a homemade dinner! My associates consist of my husband Tom and my mom Sherri. Both of them are my best friends and the best assistants I could have since they can read my mind and know what I need done simply by the look on my face. They love me, I love them and what I do.

If Altared Events had a dinner party what would the theme be? Potluck. No really, I think the best dinner parties consist of either BBQ or everyone bringing a dish and making a really casual fun evening of it. I have dreams of Martha Stewart dinner parties and I get pretty close on holidays and birthdays but the rest of the year I am a potluck lover for sure.

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? Aside from getting to be a part of the best day of someone’s life, which is a pretty big favorite of mine, I would have to say helping couples who are overwhelmed by the amount of time, work, effort and decision making that goes into planning a wedding. When my knowledge, experience and creativity can let a bride and groom breathe and enjoy the time leading up to their wedding, I consider myself very fortunate.

What would you consider Altared Events style to be? If I can be allowed to let my mind run a bit I would have to say “Modern Sense mixed with Respect for Tradition and Dedication to Individuality without forgetting Wedding Customs, in short, Altared Events.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? Where don’t I draw inspiration from? I have art books that cover everything from cave paintings to Warhol. I subscribe to every wedding and fashion magazine. I follow nearly fifty design and wedding related blogs. I attend professional trainings and courses. I study foreign cultures and customs. I study sub-cultures like Rockabilly, Goth, and Emo groups. I listen to music from Mozart to Lady Gaga to Frank Sinatra to A Fine Frenzy. I do floral, gown, stationary, jewelry and interior design. If a bride and groom hire me to do a wedding that incorporates something I don’t know about I learn it and love it quickly!

What professional in your discipline do you admire? There are so many BIG names in wedding events; Jo Gartin, David Tutera, Colin Cowie, but its easy to admire creative people who have access to limitless budgets. I tend to admire wedding professionals who care more about their clients than making a name for themselves. People whose creativity and passion doesn’t decrease when the budget does and who will put in extra effort for their clients to see that their day is a dream. I believe Altared Events fits that description perfectly.

Is there ever a moment, when doing an event, that you get butterflies? I have butterflies all the time doing weddings…not in my stomach, but in my heart! When the bride walks down the aisle, when the couple says I do, when the dances with parents happen, during the toasts and speeches…those are all amazing moments that still warm my heart, take my breath away and give me butterflies.

Any particular event you are most proud of? Thankfully I am proud of every one of my weddings but a recent wedding comes to mind in which the previous wedding planner had been fired. I was brought in to pick up the pieces of a wedding that had been taken over by an unprofessional planner and try to make sense of a wedding that had lost every touch of the couple getting married. The couple was depressed (partly due to being overcharged and losing so much money), the families were stressed and the vendors remained unpaid with contracts unsigned. In a few days I had every detail recreated to fit the couple, every family member and vendor called to reassure them of my commitment to the success of this event and hugs from the happy couple. They even thanked me in their speeches at the reception!

How far in advance do you recommend a potential couple should start looking for a wedding consultant? The good thing about hiring Altared Events is that we can do as much or as little as you need or want us to do. If you want to hire us the day you get engaged we will help you plan the entire wedding from start to finish. If the week (or the day) before the wedding you get overwhelmed give us a call and we can be there to help at the last minute. You can also hire Altared Events at any point in between…whatever suits your needs. The minute you think, “I need help, I need a wedding planner!” that’s the time to hire Altared Events.

What questions should a Bride and Groom ask when interviewing a wedding consultant? There are three things I think are important to know about a wedding consultant before or during an interview.

The first thing is their Prices. Most wedding consultants aren’t up front with their prices and I don’t agree with that. We are providing a valuable service to our clients and if a wedding consultant isn’t confident enough in their abilities to publicize their prices I question their motivation in being a wedding consultant. Altared Events has our prices posted online and we charge the same hourly as in our packages with no extra charges for overtime

The second thing that is important to know is how many weddings they take on a week, a month, a year and how many they have at the point you hire them (and how many they will take on from that point). You want to make sure your wedding consultant will remember you when you call and also have the time available to provide you quality service which often includes quantity too. Altared Events only takes on one wedding a month typically, with the maximum being two weddings at least a weekend apart so that we can always be available and reached by our couples.

The third and final thing I think is greatly underestimated is that you feel comfortable with your consultant and that she or he are someone you would feel comfortable going to coffee, shopping, or meeting up with socially. You don’t have to be best friends instantly but having someone beside you professionally who you could like personally will make the most important day of your life a success without a doubt. Altared Events always offers free consultations with no commitment to make sure that the couple is comfortable and happy with us as their consultant before they ever pay any money or agree to any plans.

What words of wisdom are you willing to bestow upon a young couple ready to make the leap into marriage? Remember that the wedding is one day but how you treat each other is for the rest of your life. Kiss and hug often and always put effort into your relationship as a couple and as friends. Take the time as often as you can to remember how much and why you love the person you are marrying and never ever forget to value the love they feel for and give you.

Where or how can they find more about Altared Events? Our website, www.altaredevents.com, email Gretchen@altaredevents.com, our blog, www.altaredevents.blogspot.com, or give us a call 916.607.0108 and we would love to answer all your questions and talk about your big day in detail!

Ok here is a hard one. If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? Flip flops and sneakers for sure. Not for a wedding of course but Old Navy flip flops and Converse Chuck Taylor’s are my personal shoes of choice. I have a ton in every color and they suit my busy life and casual style. When it comes to weddings I like to wear sensible shoes for set up and glam up a bit for the big show!

Any last words? – These words are not my own but they mean so much to me… “All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love.” – Leo Tolstoy

We love feeling and capturing the emotion of the most important day in peoples lives. We love giving them something that they and their families will treasure for generations. We want our films to have a positive effect on people.

I was very fortunate to meet Damon and his lovely bride Amy, at Dream Wedding show at CalExpo early this year. He is a creative videographer, in love with God, his family and the art of wedding videography. I very talented dude!

1. Who is Frontside Films? We are a wedding and event videography business. We film all types of things. From Weddings, engagement, and Bridal shoots to special events. We do family photo shoots. We put together photo montages for all types of occasions. We do promotional videos for businesses.

2. Where did the name come from? Frontside is a type of spin done in most action sports. We love wake boarding, snowboarding and skateboarding. It was just fitting to have a name that captured where we started as well as where we have gone and want to go from here.

3. When did you know you wanted to be a Videoagrapher? My wife bought me a high definition video camera to film each other wake boarding. We filmed some of our friends too and I put together a wakeboarding dvd. From this dvd, I had the opportunity to film the El Dorado County Swat team and put a promo video together for them. From this we got two wedding referrals. We did two weddings with in two weeks of each other and we were hooked.

4. How long has Frontside been in business? We have been in business for about three and a half years.

5. Do you have a team and if so tell me about them? My team consists of myself Damon, my wife Amy and my brother Dakin.

6. A word that best describes Frontside? Dedicated, because I work day and night to be the best at what I do and I don’t give up until I get it just right.

7. What is your favorite thing about being in this business? We love being able to capture memories for people in a creative and unique way. We love feeling and capturing the emotion of the most important day in peoples lives. We love giving them something that they and their families will treasure for generations. We want our films to have a positive effect on people.

8. What professional in your discipline do you admire? Ryan Southwell

9. How far in advance do you recommend a potential couple should start looking for a Video? 1 year

10. Today technology has allowed many to have the same tools as you, explain why Wedding couples should leave the video to the professionals? I don’t think people really get the difference until they see what I do. I think that is the biggest challenge of my business, getting people to take the time to see the difference between what I do and what their uncle or brother who just bought a new high definition video camera could do for them. If they take the time to check out my portfolio they will see the creativity and uniqueness of my craft. They will see that video can be something they won’t want to just put away in a drawer somewhere and pull out for a special occasion. We want people to enjoy watching their films over and over and we want their loved ones and other people who don’t even know them to enjoy watching their films over and over.

11. Any particular event you are most proud of? All of them, each one had its own learning curve and they all brought me further along in the process of learning to create.

12. Where do you draw your inspiration from? God, Spirituality, Nature, relationships, art, capturing loving and tender moments

13. Where or how can they find more about Frontside? You can find out more about Frontside films on our website at www.frontsidefilms.net , blog http://frontsidefilms.wordpress.com or our vimeo page http://www.vimeo.com/user1553939/videos .

Meet Audrey Gardemeyer, she so much more than just a pretty lady, she is an charming and chic floral artist and the proud owner of Bontanica Floral Designs. She is not afraid of breaking away from the traditional wedding flower arrangements and creating a true one of a kind colorful statement while remaining true to her client. I met Audrey over three years ago and have been impressed by the beautiful pieces that she can create.

Who is Botanica Floral Designs? We are a design team dedicated to making any event extraordinary through florals, decor, and your personal style!

When did you know you wanted to be a Floral Designer? I knew the Floral Industry was where my passion was at the age of 15. I was very involved with FFA (Future Farmers of America), where I was introduced to floral design and floral crop evaluation.

Where did you train for this discipline? My floral background and experience started in high school where I competed in State and National competitions in floral design as well as cut flower quality. Upon graduating from high school, I studied Environmental Horticulture Science at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where I received my Bachelor of Science degree. With over 10 years of direct hands-on experience, I have had the opportunity to work in various retail flower shops as well as for some of the most talented A.I.F.D (American Institute of Floral Designers) designers in the event industry.

How long has Botanica Floral Designs been in business? Botanica Floral Designs is starting our third year in business.

A word that best describes Botanica Floral Designs? Innovative.

Do you have a team and if so tell us about them? We do have a team of assistants which help design and deliver our fabulous events. Depending on the size and scope of an event, our team is there to make sure our client’s wishes are met with a stress-free day!

If Botanica Floral Designs were a Flower which one would it be and why? Oh Gees, there are so many flowers…. I would say an orchid. A simple bloom can be beautiful all by itself, but in an arrangement can add sophistication and elegance.

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? Weddings and events are fun! People get excited about weddings, they look forward to them, and seeing an event put together from start to finish is such a rewarding process.

What would you consider Botanica Floral Designs style to be? Our style is versatile, my favorite style is romantic. I love full, textural arrangements with unique elements.

What would a party be like in your home? Probably outdoors with wine, delicious food, maybe some Michael Buble or Dave Matthews Band background music. We are pretty kick back, we like guests to feel comfortable, and I love spending time outside!

Where do you draw your inspiration from? The world around me, whether it be interior design, fashion, fabric, nature… I’m always looking at things in a different way, out of the box, something unexpected!

What professional in your discipline do you admire? There are so many talented floral designers out there, just a few would be Michelle Rago, Ed Libby & Co., Colin Cowie… I love to follow designers in metropolis cities where budgets are extravagant and styles range.

Is there ever a moment, when doing an event, that you get butterflies? I am always excited to hand a bride her bouquet and see her reaction. Because they haven’t actually ever seen the finished product, it is always a joy to see their elated reaction. Another favorite part of the day is watching the bride and her father walk down the aisle. Such a moving moment!

You provide a product that is seasonal, can you tell us which flowers are best per each season? Of course there are some basic flowers which are available year round such as roses, gerbera daisies, anything grown in a hot house where the temperature can be controlled. But, some of my most favorite flowers are things that are seasonally available such as peonies, ranunculus, coneflower pods, blooming branches, helleborus, and I could go on!

Any wedding stories you are willing to share with us? Yes! Just this past week we were hired to do a wedding in less than 36 hours, yes, you read this right! It was actually a “Platinum Wedding” for the WETV channel, and will be airing this next Spring. It was a short timeline, and it seemed as though the planets aligned with the floral availability, my floral vendors, and our wonderful design crew! We pulled it off, nothing is impossible as far as I’m concerned. : )

Any particular event you are most proud of? I am truly proud of each event I work on. Each event is completely unique in itself, a reflection of my client’s personality and the feel they are desiring to achieve for their special day.

What is your ideal client? Someone who trusts my eye, and that I will carry out their look to the full potential. Someone who is willing to give a little artistic freedom. When I work with clients’ like this, they are always blown away by the results!

How far in advance do you recommend a potential couple should start looking for a Floral Designer? I recommend nine to twelve months in advance. Your flowers are an important part of the overall look of your event, so making decisions in step with the rest of your decor is essential.

What questions should a Bride in Groom ask when interviewing a Floral Designer for their wedding? What exactly will you be purchasing, what size will the arrangements be, can the designer show you an example or photo of a comparable price? What does the designers delivery entail? Is it a drop and go service? I think it is important that a Bride & Groom makes certain that a designer really meshes with the look they are trying to achieve as well as meshes with their personality. You will be working hand in hand with your designer, and your decor is dependent upon this person interpreting your visions, make sure they “get” you.

What words of wisdom are you willing to bestow upon a young couple ready to make the leap into marriage? I would say, be open and honest, always, as with everything else you do in life. I think that is a healthy way to live life, and these are words I live by.

Why should they hire Botanica Floral Designs? We are dedicated to growing our happy clientele one bride at a time. With every event we deliver, our reputation is at stake, we want to exceed your expectations, and that is what we are here to do.

Where or how can they find more about Botanical Floral Designs? Check out our website, http://www.botanicafloraldesigns.com, and visit our blog to see some of our most recent events, http://www.botanicafloraldesigns.com/blog

Who do you recommend that I interview next? A sweet and very talented artist, Sara Hamm with Bella Vita Invitations. Her stuff is so unique!

If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? I would live in sandals all year if I could… what can I say, I am a beach kinda girl

Matt Brys, to say that he’s just a DJ for Extreme Production is an understatement. This guys is funny, energetic, stylish and knows what music to play to get those buns of the chair and on to the dance floor. When Eric of Acti-Video recommended that I interview this guy I jumped at the chance, and after this interview you will understand why Matt and the Extreme Production team is in such high demand in the Sacramento Wedding Scene.

Who is Extreme Productions? A complete event entertainment and production company. DJ, MC, Lighting, Staging, Live Music, Production, Event Management…. We make your event fun!

What does Extreme Productions bring to it’s customers? Customer Service is first and foremost. We are nothing without our customers J We pride ourselves on providing exceptional customer service coupled with award winning production design and event entertainment.

When did you know you wanted to be a DJ? LOL! I used to call friends on the phone in 4th and 5th grade and pretend to do a radio show with my little boombox over the phone. Ya. I am a geek J Ohhh and imagine that with a slight mullet haircut (which I must have thought was the coolest thing ever). It was a sight to behold! LOL!

Where did you train for this discipline? I started in radio in Sacramento when I was 16. I began as an intern and 3 months later (and a little bit of luck) I had my own show. It was cool to be the youngest DJ in Sacramento at the time. Kind of a culture shock too! On the basic level, anyone can be a “DJ”. That’s the beauty of this business. You can go out today, pick up some gear and begin practicing, listening, rehearsing and discovering on your own. The art of our industry is to fine tune those skills over years of practice. A great DJ knows how to create a moment, how to play just the right song at the right moment to create a reaction. That’s something that takes a while to learn.

When did you start your business? Extreme Productions was started in 1994.

Does Extreme Productions only provide music? That’s funny. We actually have a tagline on our website that says “It’s more than just music…” It’s true to! We work with our clients to create an “experience” at their event. It’s creating scenes within their event, creating the soundtrack for their event and coupling that with nice segues and entertainment. It’s more than just showing up and “playing music.” It’s understanding the clients needs, concerns and vision and creating an event that will WOW them!

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? The people. Hands down. There are some really neat, passionate and caring people in this business! If it wasn’t for these people, I would not enjoy what we do nearly as much.

What song best describe you? LOL! Depends on the moment of the day! Right now… it’s “Tell Me About It” by Joss Stone. Ask me in 5 minutes… I might give you a Clapton tune.

What would a party be like in your home? It runs the gammit. I dig cooking, wine and cocktail parties. I LOVE energy and laughter and fun.

What questions should a Bride in Groom ask when interviewing a DJ for their wedding? My biggest piece of advice… interview the actual DJ who would be doing your event. Insure that their personality meshes well with yours. Insure they will be a good representative for you and your event. Insure they will blend well with your guests. Ask a TON of questions and go with your gut instinct.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? EVERYWHERE. Art. TV. A beautiful picture from an event. Colors. I love love love colors! Musically… I dig just about everything…

What makes you dance? A good bass line and a rock star beat.

Does Extreme Productions have a style? Down to earth, approachable, passionate and fun. We want to be the person in the room that you WANT to have in the room… while making sure we are NOT the star of the show. It’s a balance.

A word that best describes Extreme Productions? Driven.

Do you have a team, how are they? Amazing! Seriously… Extreme Productions IS the people who make up this company. They are the tireless actors, DJs, MCS, Lighting designers, Stage setters, audio and visual geniuses who go out of their way to make sure an event is a success. Extreme Productions would not be what it is without them!

Why should they hire Extreme Productions? If you are looking for a customized event that is built from the ground up around your personality, style, taste, vision, needs and wants… look no further.

What song are you sick off hearing? LOL! Do you have an hour? We just launched an ad campaign that says “Tired of hearing the YMCA… we are too.” LOL we will play whatever our clients want to hear (even the YMCA if they desperately need it) but we really try to stay away from the cheese. You can have a good time WITHOUT the chicken dance, YMCA or Macarena. Seriously. It can be done J

What event are you most proud off? We love our weddings. We love being a part of those moments that cannot be replicated and are spontaneous and full of emotion. There is nothing better than the sound of spontaneous laughter or a warm and sincere tear.

What is the most un-traditional thing that Extreme Production has done at a wedding? Well… we have had some interesting requests over the years. We have introduced a bride to a wedding ceremony atop of a 30’ front loader Tractor. We have landed helicopters for a grand farewell. We have done surprise weddings (where guests think they are coming to a party… and a wedding just happens…).

Where or how can they find more about Extreme Productions? Our website is always new and available 24/7 at extremeprodjs.com. We always LOVE to hear from you at 916 773 4329

Who do you recommend that I interview next? Gosh… SO MANY! Just talked with Katie from Ambience Floral, Harmony from Citizen Hotel and Debra from Tres Fabu Event Planning and Fearon from Arden Hills Resort Club and Spa about an hour ago. Call any of those ladies to start…. J Give them a hug for me J

A Sacramento Chic Wedding Band. I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with Carol of the Groove Thang Band many times and I must say that she is a sweet petite bombshell and the rest of the band is just as cool. They perform all over Sacramento and are sure to make you dance and sing. I chatted a little with John, the band’s manager, about the band and this is what he had to say.

Who is the Groove Thang Band? The Grove Thang is a 7-piece high-energy band that has been performing since 2001. Groove Thang performs non-stop dance music from 70’s to the present, along with smooth jazz and wedding classics.

When did you know you wanted to be a band? After performing for a long time in different rock bands, we decided to form a dance band, based on the disco era. It seems that women love to dance and they seem to get the party started. We later expanded to include 80’s and 90’s. Now we perform mainly as a wedding band and cover all genres of music, but all with a dance feel.

Where did you train for this discipline? Most of us have had private training in guitar, drums, bass, piano, and vocals. Several members also know music theory and practice, practice, practice.

How long has Groove Thang Band been in business? We have been performing as a band since 2001 and the full 7-piece band was established in 2005.

A word that best describes the Groove Thang Band? Fun.

Tell us about your band members? Our band members all have daytime jobs ranging from teachers, to engineers, programmers, video editors and we also have a sign language interpreter! Each member is dedicated to the band and is driven to put on a great show for our clients in weddings, corporate functions and clubs.

If the Groove Thang Band were a Song, which one would describe you best? Get Down Tonight. Do a little dance, make a little love… We want it to be a dance party and share our love for music with all.

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? I believe performing at weddings. To be a part of a couple special days is very rewarding.

What would a party be like in your home? Lots of food, great music and uninhibited fun!

Where do you draw your inspiration? Respect for the artist who originally wrote and performed the songs. We try to remain true to the songs with a little personal spice.

Is there ever a moment, when doing an event, that you get butterflies? Always before a performance you get butterflies. They go away within minutes and this allows us to interact with each client(s).

What is your ideal client? One who is easy to work with! This may be a type A person who nails the itinerary, so we do not have to do much planning and we just have to follow the path. On the other extreme, a couple that just want to have fun with no itinerary requires us to develop an itinerary, but is just happy as long as they hear good music and everyone has fun.

How far in advance do you recommend a potential couple should start looking for a Wedding Band? From 6 months to 1 year. The sooner is always better. It allows the couple to get the entertainment portion out of the way and allows them to focus on other major items. All song requests, suggestions, should be given to the band manager well in advance so the band can focus on the request.

What questions a Bride in Groom ask when interviewing a Band for their wedding?

Do you perform special request?

Where will the band be performing live?

Does the band have liability insurance?

Does the band require a written contract?

Does the band have a standard set list of songs list to choose from?

What type of music does the band perform?

What type of wardrobe will the band be wearing?

Do we have to provide meals for the band?

Will we be able to use the band’s PA for toasts, etc?

Will the band provide an emcee to help facilitate the event?

How do we make a deposit / final payment?

How much space does the band need to setup and tear down?

How much power is needed for the band’s PA and instruments?

What words of wisdom are you willing to bestow upon a young couple ready to make the leap into marriage? Make sure that you attend premarital counseling to discuss basic life issues, children, work, religion, free time, money, etc. It is better to discuss they very important issues before you tie the knot, rather than after you are married.

Why should they hire the Groove Thang Band? The Grove Thang Band has years of experience performing facilitating weddings. We are easy to work with and willing to work with each client. We want your day to be even more special when you work with the Grove Thang.

Where or how can they find more about the Groove Thang Band? Check out our website at www.groovethangband.com or contact the band manager John Espinoza by e-mail at john@groovethangband.com or by phone at 916-873-2257

If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? Pumps are sexy and fun!

Carissa’s work is so charming and well detailed that if I were to define it, I would have to say that it’s nothing but “CHIC”! While other artist use oil, plaster and marble to express themselves, she chose the medium of sugar, flour and fondant; thank goodness. I’m a sucker for a good art show however, Carissa’s work is not only pleasing to the eyes, but the taste buds as well. Thank you Lora for recommending Sugar & Spice.

Who is Sugar and Spice? We are a custom order bakery that caters to those special events that make life sweet.

A word that best describes Sugar and Spice? Tasty.

What would you consider Sugar and Spice style to be? Modern or Classic with a twist.

When did you know you wanted to be a Pastry Chef? When I couldn’t stand NOT being a pastry chef any more.

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I love using modern art as inspiration, but it’s pretty common to get inspiration from stationary.

Where did you train for this discipline? California Culinary Academy.

How long has Sugar and Spice been in business? Just about three years, part of which was broken up by stints in restaurants.

Do you have a team and if so tell us about them? I have had a couple of assistants, but, for the most part they are on an on-call basis. They are a great group of gals ranging from stay at home mom’s who need some professional/adult interaction to cooking school students. I also currently have my first intern.

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? My clients! I love cooking, but I love making people happy through food even more!

What would a dinner party be like in your home? Oh, easy answer… just like any of the fine dining restaurants that my hubby and I love to go to. Great wine, way too much cheese, multiple courses with great seasonal veggies and out of this world sauces, and of course a memorable dessert.

If you a pastry which would you be? hmmmm, Passion Fruit Bavarian – light and refreshing, but with a little bit of zip and a sneaky rich side.

Finish this sentence, a Bride needs a wedding cake, like a Groom needs a?… flask? Hard to answer, particularly since I don’t feel that every bride NEEDS a wedding cake! It’s a nice extra, but by no means the end all, be all.

What professional in your discipline do you admire? Shari Yard and Gale Gand, both have taken traditional American (or European) desserts and given them a modern twist.

Do you belong to any professional associations? Not currently, but I do have a list.

What is your ideal client? Someone who is all about the food!

What questions should a Bride and Groom ask when interviewing a Pastry Chef? Where have they worked? What is their inspiration? What are some of their favorite projects in the past?

How far in advance should bridal couple start looking for a Pastry Chef? No more than six months. I’ve worked with couples sooner than that and frequently they haven’t finalized their invitations, flowers or general wedding style.

What does Sugar and Spice bring to its customers? Creativity, experience and a fresh perspective on the last course.

Any wedding stories you are willing to share with us? Each wedding story is so different, but with each couple I really try to listen to them and hear what they are looking for before I start offering them options. There are so many variable, is price the most important factor? Is look and feel the most important factor? Flavor is always the most important to me and fortunately that is always something I share with my clients.

Is there ever a moment were you get butterflies? I had a cake slide after moving it earlier this year. Very traumatic, but after a little swearing I pulled it back together. Note to self, NEVER move the cake after it has been assembled.

Where or how can they find more about Sugar and Spice? http://www.sugarandspice.me and http://sugarandspiceand.blogspot.com

If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? Loafers… stylish, but comfortable and easy to find with non-slip soles

What words of wisdom are you willing to bestow upon a young couple ready to make the leap into marriage? Marry your best friend, I’m forever telling my husband that he is a constant source of amusement, whether he intends to be or not. You have to be able to laugh together and enjoy each other’s company.

Who do you recommend that I interview next? Nicole Jackson, Dynamite Weddings

Sacramento Custom Clothier Speaks with Sacramento Chic – A moment for the Groom to shine:

I was really excited to meet Ryan Douglas; let me explain. A wedding is such a beautiful and exciting event, however as today’s Grooms gets more involved in the affairs of the wedding day, more and more have expressed how they don’t have a say in any of it and that they feel more like another wedding accessory. A friend told me that for his wedding “Vendors seem to cater to the emotional needs of the Bride and the Mother of the Bride and all I got was the lecture of what not to do at the bachelor party and to make sure I showed up on time on the wedding day” this is why I was thrilled to meet Ryan. R. Douglas is reaching out to the Grooms by giving them a sense of style that commands attention with it’s custom, classic and elegant Mens garments.

Who is Ryan Douglas Custom Clothier? I initiated R. Douglas Custom Clothier in 2003 with a passion to reintroduce the concept of custom tailoring.

When did you know you wanted to design Men’s garments? Having a strong interest in fashion and Men’s formal wear throughout high school, I was unable to find tailored off-the-rack clothing that fit to my preference. Thus began my research in starting my own line of custom-made garments.

Where did you train for this discipline? I have always studied Men’s fashion out of personal interest, although I did pursue formal education with Academy Art University in San Francisco, CA.

How long has R. Douglas been in business? I have been in the business of making suits for eight years. R. Douglas line officially launched in 2003, six years ago.

What word best describes R. Douglas? Innovative

Do you have a team and if so tell us about them? My team of elite tailors offer 30 years tailoring experience to deliver hand-made garments with superior quality and workmanship. The style of tailoring used on R. Douglas garments originated in Shanghai and is the finest form of hand workmanship in Asia.

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? Men’s fashion is my passion. I am able to do what I love and call it “work”. I truly stand by the quality and service of R. Douglas and receive a great sense of accomplishment when clients first try on their garments.

What would you consider R. Douglas style to be? R. Douglas Custom Clothier is unique in that it allows clients to express their own personal style and individuality on a level not possible with ready-made clothing. R. Douglas is not the typical haberdashery. It not only caters to individuals who prefer the timeless elegance of classic styles, but also serves to benefit those who seek trend-setting fashions.

What biggest “no-no” in Men’s fashion? First, of course, would be an ill-fitting suit. Second would probably be brown shoes with a navy suit.

Finish this line, a Man needs a suit like a women needs a? Skirt

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I have always been inspired by Tom Ford. Of course other designer labels serve as inspiration: Etro, Dolce & Gabbana, Ermenegildo Zegna.

What professional in your discipline do you admire? Once again, Tom Ford (Gucci’s creative director for many years and now runs is own clothing line).

Every Man should own at least one suit, what do you recommend that one suit to be? A dark grey solid is perhaps the most functional suit. If a Man were limited to only one suit, I would recommend a dark grey. Works well with any tie, belt, or pair of shoes. It works great for business or night out.

What should every Man own besides a good suit? Expensive shoes and, of course, a custom shirt.

Why a tailored suit and not one off the rack? R. Douglas garments offer many advantages to off-the-rack clothing items:

Individuality – with more than 35 garment styling features and an expansive collection of fabrics available, you are able to create the garment that most represents YOU.

Perfect Fit – a precise and systematic body measurement process ensures that your garment will fit like no other.

Convenience – R. Douglas clients enjoy the luxury of a tailor visiting the home or office. In many cases, subsequent orders can be carried out with a brief phone conversation.

What are the fall / winter colors for men in 2009/2010? Every designer label chooses a color scheme for each season. In Men’s tailored clothing, fall / winter colors commonly include black, dark grey, rust, dark chocolate, and purple.

Does the Groom always have to go with a dark suit on his wedding day? No. In fact, many weddings now defy the traditional approach with the use of a black tuxedo, bow tie and cummerbund. In my opinion, any suit reflective of the groom’s style and personality is appropriate for the wedding day.

What is your ideal client? Someone who is not satisfied with the fit, selection, or style features of off-the-rack clothing items.

How far in advance do you recommend a potential client come and see you? Since garment construction is 4-6 weeks, I would recommend a 2-3 month minimum. For a special event or occasion in which a particular fabric or style is necessary, I would recommend at least 4-5 months prior to event. This will ensure time for finding accessories and other items after the garment is made.

What words of wisdom are you willing to bestow upon a young couple ready to make the leap into marriage? Since I was recently married (February 7, 2009), I can say enjoy the engagement, don’t stress over wedding details, and look forward to wedding day. Being married is amazing!

Where or how can they find more about Ryan Douglas? Website: www.rdouglas.net Blog: www.rdouglas.net/blog Phone: 916.524.9274

If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? None of the above. I would be a black Prada lace-up, cap-toe oxford.

Ok everybody has a friend that is always cheerful and makes everyone around them laugh and lightens any mood; Eric Leas is just that individual. Eric is a true professional, who’s love for his clients and the Wedding Industry is apparent in the service he provides. In fact, there was a fire this weekend that could have put a damper on his client wedding day but because of his fast thinking he was able to…I’m getting ahead of myself. I’ll let Eric tell you the story in his own words.

Who is Acti-Video? Primarily Acti-Video is “ME” Eric Leas- but I have a team of Videographer’s who care about the client and the activities at their event. We enjoy our work and we are team players doing all we can to help allow the client to have a stress-free, happy event and to be completely satisfied with our service.

When did you know you wanted to be a Videographer? I have a few productions I filmed in college in 1983. I look at the work done in those and I realize that I was very much into the cinematic aspect of filming even then…So I’ll say 1983- Even though back then I really wanted to be a Rock Star. J

Where did you train for this discipline? CSUS-Sacramento (I hold a Media Communications Bachelor Degree & a Music Minor) and on my own time.

How long has Acti-Video been in business? Since 1996 officially

A word that best describes Acti-Video? Unique

Do you have a team and if so tell us about them? Yes- 4 gentleman- Respectfully- Steve (been with me since 2000), Rusty (Since 2001), John (Since 2004), and Marciano (The newbie, since 2008). They all are talented in various ways with AV production and each has their strong & weak points, so I am able to match them up accordingly and make a strong team and use them for their talents. Usually we will only do up to 2 events in a day, occasionally it works out that we can handle 3, but that’s rare.

If Acti-Video were a movie which one would describe it? “Good Fellas ” J

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? I Love, Love Love, Filming. Being behind the camera at an event no matter what the stress level, is my favorite thing about being in this business!

What would you consider Acti-Video’s style to be? Customized work for each client. I like to get a feel from the client & produce for each one individually. We don’t put our style into any category.

What would a movie night be like in your home? Action, Suspense, Drama, Horror and Sci-Fi all wrapped up into one! Oh and tons of snacks & goodies to much on while watching the flick!

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw it from various places. What I see through the lens, who I am working with at an event or function, the music I am using in the post production, whatever is said at the event as I am filming, etc. Inspiration is all around us and as a videographer, we have to be able to see those inspiring moments and catch them on film. As an editor we have to present them in their best light!

What professional in your discipline do you admire? Creatively, Mike Jensen, Sheffield Multimedia

Is there ever a moment, when doing an event, that you get butterflies? Sometimes I get emotional during the toasts of a wedding or the vows, if they hit me just right. Sometimes at a corporate gig, if it’s a live shoot to a big screen set-up, where you have to be as perfect and steady as possible; I will get butterflies, when we go live.

Any wedding stories you are willing to share with us? The big story this last weekend was the Wedding of Pedro & Jodi Vergara at the Ridge in Auburn, it was on the news. The wedding that was evacuated two times from two venues due to the Auburn Fires, but we ended up holding the event at Sun City Roseville and it went over real well. If you have not heard about it, here is a link with more info and a spot on the newscast http://www.news10.net/news/story.aspx?storyid=66135&catid=2

What is your ideal client? Hmmm, not sure about this one. Ideally, I would say the ideal clients are the one’s who come to me knowing that they want “ME” for their event, either from a referral or from seeing me at another event.

How far in advance do you recommend a potential couple should start looking for a Videographer? I usually recommend 6 months to a year in advance, but for some reason, most clients do not take that seriously and end up somewhere in the 3-6 month range and yet even others lately seem to be on this 1-2 month kick! (Many times I am not available, and either try to get them to go with one of my teammates if available, or I have to send them away because we have no availability.)

What questions should a Bride & Groom ask when interviewing a videographer for their wedding? Ugh…There are a bunch of places to get this info. On-line, or in a magazine like Sacramento Bride and Groom, or Real Wedding Magazine, etc. I would say talk to them in person if possible, meet them, see their work & go with your feeling overall about who you like, who you would want at your wedding all day & who you get along with best!

What words of wisdom are you willing to bestow upon a young couple ready to make the leap into marriage? As far as for the wedding, do not think that good ol’ Uncle Bob will be able to make you a great video of your day. I have had many, many couples call & come show me footage that they have from some “Friend or Uncle who supposedly is pretty good with a camera” and it is just terrible and I cannot fix it for them; particularly not for a price that is cheaper than if they just hired a professional in the first place! There is no magic trick I can perform with BAD footage; bottom line. There are several surveys out there on the internet that discuss “The one thing brides regret not doing on their wedding day” and some 95% of brides who do not hire a professional videographer, wish that they had done so for the wedding. So be for warned.

Why should they hire Acti-Video? If you have read my responses to this interview so far & you like what I have said, or find it interesting, then I think you have a great reason right there.

Where or how can they find more about Acti-Video? 916-788-1690-Call me & let’s talk. Or if you want the safe route- www.acti-video.com and you can get more information there.

Who do you recommend that I interview next? Sonny Gallardo-Exquisite events or Matt Brys- Extreme Productions

If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? Most likely Sneakers. You know the pair you have owned forever because they really are comfortable and fell great on your feet. They are worn a bit, but they feel so good you just can’t let them go. J

I had the good fortune of meeting Lora Ward on September 22, 2007 as I worked as a second shooter for Allison Stahl. The day began at the Hyatt Hotel and ended at the four-story, 24,000 square foot 58 room Grand Island Mansion. She ran the whole operation with a smile and never broke a sweat. At first I thought she was a family member of the Bride, but later I learned that is the type of service she provides all her clients. No wonder why “A Day to Remember” is one of Sacramento’s premier wedding coordination and event planning companies.

Who is A Day to Remember? An (extremely helpful) wedding and event planning business with over 25 years experience in the industry.

When did you know you wanted to be a Event Planner? As a wee babe of about 25 years of age

Where did you train for this discipline? In the early years, I assisted the older “church ladies” with setting up receptions in the church social hall, and then later became involved with professional organizations such as June Wedding, Inc. (certified) as well as through the Association of Bridal Consultants

How long has A Day to Remember been in business? Since rocks were soft – kidding! More than 25 years.

What word best describes A Day to Remember? Only one word? Let’s go with one adjective and one noun – extremely helpful.

Do you have a dream team and if so tell us about them? I have enjoyed working with many dream teams, who understand that there are no Prima Donas on wedding day. We are all there to serve the client and work together in a cohesive manner (no matter what!)

What is your favorite thing about being in this business? Seeing the end results of months of planning, and perfection is achieved… and my bride is thrilled!

What would you consider A Day to Remember style to be? Relaxed, fun, efficient, and stress-free.

What would a party be like in your home? I’m not a home party kind of girl… too much work to get my house cleaned!!

Where do you draw your inspiration from? I feed off my brides as most come into my office brimming with ideas. I do devour magazines (both home and garden as well as wedding/industry publications). Certain websites are addicting, too.

What professional in your discipline do you admire? Colin Cowie – he’s so dreamy, and oh so talented as an event planner!

Is there ever a moment, when doing an event, that you get butterflies? No nervous butterflies; only excited butterflies!

Any wedding stories you are willing to share with us? Too many stories to share, and no I have no “horror” stories; all my weddings are well executed.

Any particular event you are most proud of? So many to be proud of… where do I start? One comes to mind that was unique in that the wedding and reception was held at Thunderbird Lodge, Lake Tahoe (this is at a rather remote private estate built on boulders and outcroppings on the East Shore). The rental fee is high and so my client wanted to enjoy this historical venue for many hours. We shuttled the guests in at 1:00 p.m. and the last ones to leave was at 11:00 p.m. – 10 hours! We had four meal services throughout the day, starting with a greeting beverage and very light lunch, heavy appetizers after the ceremony, the wedding feast, and a dessert buffet with late night snacks. Tours were provided of the venue and short boat rides on a vintage Chris Craft were available for the guests to enjoy.

I understand time lines are important. Could you give us an example of one? There is never enough time on wedding day, so I build in plenty of time for possible delays. I always allow enough time so there is no helter-skelter rushing.

What is your ideal client? A bride who is willing to put her trust in my abilities and is appreciative of all that I can help her with. My brides are students with a job, or professional career women, and also out of town/state clients.

How far in advance do you recommend a potential couple should start looking for a Event Planner? No earlier than 12 months prior; but I’ve had clients require full service coordination with as little as 8 weeks planning (easy!)

Why should they hire A Day to Remember? OMG, I am such a helpful resource! If the bride is looking for a fun, easy-to- work with, organized, experienced wedding planner, they need look no further. I have a vast amount of knowledge, and because of the many different situations and experiences that I have encountered in my career, I have many “tricks up my sleeve.” My vendor resources are vast, my attention to detail is great, and my gentle nudging is appreciated.

Where or how can they find more about A Day to Remember? My website, www.adaytorememberca.com is quite thorough and follow along with my blog. I am often quoted or have featured weddings in Sacramento Bride & Groom Magazine.

Who do you recommend that I interview next? John Vu of ProFinish Design (if not for photography, then for the photobooth). Carissa of Sugar and Spice (specialty desserts) – www.sugarandspice.me

If you were a shoe would you be Flats, Boots, Pumps, Sneakers, Thongs or Loafers? Dearfoam Slippers. And, Carlos… my teenaged daughters told me a long time ago to never refer to a sandal as a “thong.” Geez!

Any last words? I don’t know how brides and grooms, and their mothers, manage without a knowledgeable wedding planner at their side, throughout the months. There is so much I can help with! I’m a “God Send” (and I’m very humble, too)
